Bringing Home A Puppy Be Prepared

Writen by Susan Daniel

So you just loved that sweet little puppy that you found in the pet shop. It will keep you company, and give you kisses, and guard your valuables. But what do you need to care for the lovable little thing and ensure it is happy and healthy?

Basic Needs – All puppies will need a water bowl, a food bowl, and a place to sleep. Some pet owners get automatic feeders and water dispensers for the convenience. For sleeping, there are various sized doggie beds and crates. Many people crate train their dogs for sleeping and while the owner is away from home.

Play Time – Pets need exercise. You should walk your dog once a day if possible. You will need a collar, a leash, and some disposable plastic bags to take with you to clean up any unsightly messes. A good leash to use is the retractable type. Also included in play time are toys, toys, and more toys. A good game of fetch is a great way to get exercise.

Health – All new puppies need to be taken to a good vet. They need shots and heartworm medicine.

Training – A good way to train your dog is to get a good book on the subject. Also needed are small treats that you can keep in a pocket while training. Dogs live for treats!

A puppy can be a lot of fun and will give you a tons of love over time. So be sure to have on hand all the things you'll need for your puppy to be happy healthy, and secure in its surroundings.

Famous Teacup Chihuahuas

Writen by Kari Eriksson

Chihuahuas including the nowadays often searched for teacup chihuahuas have risen to fame on many occasions throughout history and modern times. Teacup chihuahuas have been on the big screen in movie theaters, on the laps of celebritys and as mascots for fastfood companies just to mention a few.

Lately, probably the first that comes to mind for many is Tinkerbell Hilton, the teacup chihuahua pet of Paris Hilton that even wrote her own diaries. She was bought originally from a greek breeder, reportedly for somewhere close to 4000 USD and went on to star in all three seasons of The Simple Life, the 30-minute TV reality show.

Another teacup chihuahua is Bruiser who made it to the big screen as the pet of Elle Wood, played by Reese Witherspoon, in the Legally Blond movies. Bruiser makes the trip from fashionable Beverly Hills to the university world of Harward Law School. The movie was released in july of 2001 and followed by a sequel two years laters where Bruiser again was on the movie cover and obviously starred in the film.

Teacup chihuahuas or at least chihuahuas in general have also made it into business big time. Chihuahuas are commonly associated with Mexico and so is fast food chain Taco Bell. So in the later part of the 1990s the Taco Bell Chihuahua Gidget hit the commercial world with a slam. In commercials for the company Gidgets speaks through special effects and goes ordering tacos. This character grew so popular that it spawned toy production and started a subculture of its own.

If we take the step from the real world to the cartoon one we find someone who resembles a teacup chihuahua, but sometimes it is hard to tell if he has the required size for a teacup chihuahua. Of course we are here talking about Ren Höek, the partner to Stimpson J Cat in the Ren and Stimpy lineup. The former is a somewhat neurotic character that often found ways to be not so nice to his fellow character causing parents to be critical about the whole series. Ren is often considered mexican and was originally inspired by a postcard of a chihuahua in a sweater.

Last, but definitely not least, we should mention Wheely Willy, the inspiring motivator. He is seemingly a little big to be a teacup chihua but he really deserves mention. Abonded and injured at early age he was not able to walk on his own until his new owner found him sort of wheelchair for his back legs and now he visits hospitals and has been the subject of two books bringing inspiration to the people he meets.

Kari Eriksson is an infopreneur and a dog lover since many years. Lately Teacup Chihuahuas have become a special interest and he operates The Teacup Chihuahuas Directory at http://www.teacupchihuahuasdirectory.com where you can find articles, links and useful resources.

Homemade dog biscuit recipes include peanut butter, eggs, and flour with bone meal. Cheesy dog biscuits include cheddar cheese, chicken broth, whole wheat flour, cornmeal and oats, while bacon flavored dog treats make use of whole wheat flour, milk, eggs and bacon fat for flavor. There are also microwavable dog biscuits that use a variety of flours including cracked wheat, rye, and whole wheat.

Vegetarian treat recipes include vegetarian dog biscuits which use peanuts for the dog's protein source. Vegan dog biscuit recipes and doggie Christmas cookies also include peanut butter, honey, cornmeal, and flour.

Copper cookie cutters in fun shapes, such as big and small dog bones, cows, roosters, and squirrels will make fine dog treats that you can make into biscuit treats for your four-legged friend.

If you love baking for your dog, there are homemade breads and cookie recipes that you can follow. These recipes include peanut butter bones, chicken and honey biscuits, big boy beef biscuits, and everyday biscuits. Other dog treats include parmesan herb treats, apple cinnamon drops, whole wheat cream cheese Danish, peanut butter and honey oat crunchies, and beef biscuits. Remember that not all food that is good for human consumption is good also for dogs. Some food can cause allergic reactions such as itchy skin, rashes, coat problems, and dull, thinning hair in dogs.

What Are Ragdoll Cats

Writen by Ben Harper

The Ragdoll cat breed consists of a variety of medium to long hair cats. Ragdoll cats are famous for their placid temperaments as well as their affectionate nature. Ragdolls are the most easy going and gentle cat you can own. These cats are not aggressive and should only be kept indoors. They do not have fighting instincts so they will not defend themselves when provoked.

The term "Ragdoll" comes from the way they go totally limp when picked up. The breed originated in California back in the 1960s. The first Ragdoll was a cat named Josephine. There are many myths regarding the history of Ragdoll cats; for instance, one account claims Ragdoll cats were left on earth by an alien race. Many of these wild claims were made by the breed's founder and are still passed around today.

Ragdoll cats are bred selectively for certain characteristics. These selective traits include size, characteristic limpness when picked up, as well as their easy going nature. The breed was created from a mixture of Birman, Persian, and Burmese cats. The Ragdoll breed has been imitated by other breeds such as the Ragamuffin; however, many of these competing breeds are not recognized by cat registries as there is little differentiating them from Ragdoll cats.

Ragdoll Cats come in a variety of patterns and colors. The pointed patterns fall into three categories: mitted, bicolor, and colorpoint. The varieties of colors are lilac, seal, blue, and chocolate. Additionally there are several nonstandard color offerings such as red and lynx point. A typical Ragdoll takes 2 years to fully mature; adult males weigh between 15 to 20 pounds. Female cats weigh in at 9 to 13 pounds. Ragdoll cats are the largest domestic cat and make excellent pets.

Ben Harper is a Ragdoll cat enthusiast and founder of the site Ragdoll Cats which was established to promote the Ragdoll cat breed. To learn more about this unusual cat visit: http://www.ragdollcats.info

7 Good Reasons For Playing With Your Cat

Writen by Larry Chamberlain

Playing reinforces the bond between you and your cat.

Playing with your cat is the best possible way to build up a bond between the two of you. Do you want your cat to think of you as more than someone who is there to provide food, shelter and warmth? Then regular play sessions will go a long way to ensuring that your feline friend sees you as an object of his or her affections, that you are someone to greet when you arrive home.

Do not let your cat think that your hands are playthings. If your cat gets the message that it is OK to scratch at, or bite your hands, you will have the devils own job of curing him of the habit.

Playing will help preventing your cat from becoming overweight.

The best way to ensure that your cat does not become overweight is by feeding him correctly with a balanced diet, but exercise also plays a part in keeping your kitty healthy. If yours is an indoor cat, then playing with you may be his only opportunity for exertion and staying trim. Don't overdo it though, limit play time to about 15 minutes.

Playing will help your cat to become confident.

Kittens learn how to relate with their siblings and other cats through play, it is their social education, how they learn their place in the world. Help you cat to continue this enlightenment by playing with him.

Also regular play periods, coupled with petting sessions, will get your cat used to human interaction, he will be less likely to shy away and hide, when visitors call.

Playing will help your cat develop his hunting abilities.

Hunting is a natural instinct for all cats, a cat confined to indoors usually has little chance to express and develop this instinct. Enjoy some of your play times using an interactive cat toy, the kind with a catnip mouse on the end of a cord are good. Encourage kitty to chase the toy mouse, allow him to pounce for the 'kill'.

Have a selection of cat toys but use only three or four in one session, next time amuse your feline with a different choice. Keep some toys only for play sessions, put them away between times, so that they remain interesting to your cat. Toys like catnip mice can be safely left out for kitty to amuse himself with, but be aware that small objects can, and do, get swallowed by cats. Never encourage playing with buttons, pieces of string, small bells etc. Plastic bags are as dangerous for cats as they are for children, and are not playthings.

Playing will help your cat release aggression.

Cats often display aggressive traits through boredom. Tutor your cat not to scratch, bite or attack you with play sessions. Use praise to reward your cat for playing gently, as soon as he shows any sign he is about to use his teeth or claws - end the play session. This will teach your cat that aggressive cat behavior is best directed to his toys, and not you!

Playing is 'Fun' for your cat!.

Cats need fun in their lives, just like humans need it. Relieve the monotony of eating, snoozing and using the litter tray by putting a bit of fun in your cats life. You will have a happier, more confident and less aggressive kitty.

Playing is 'Fun' for you!.

And finally, it is fun for you to play with your cat. A cat is a wonderful pet just to have around the place to admire its beauty and for its company. But how much better for you to enjoy a little fun by playing with your cat. Cat playtime, good for your cat, good for you!

Helping Your Pets Cope With The Stress Caused By Loud Noise

Writen by Mariangie Gonzalez

Which is the noisiest species of all? Nope, not the lions, or the elephants, or the geese… it's us, humans. Our voices were not enough, we started making music and creating musical instruments to help us being louder.

This Holiday season will not only be noisy, this year we're starting earlier because this year we have Election Day! Where I'm from, we go to the streets and make loud noises with our car horns after the results are official and we know our party won, maybe you're so excited because you know your candidate is going to win, that you are already prepared with everything to celebrate your triumph the noisiest way, but have you thought about how that noise affects your pet?

Pets don't understand what is happening, even if you dress them with a patriotic costume. They don't know this are "happy" noises, they just perceive them as a sign of danger. They get nervous, afraid, and if they feel they're exposed they will try as hard as they can to look for a hideout, sometimes this means they run away.

What can you do to minimize the effect of loud noises on your pet?

1.Ask your veterinarian if it's recommended to give your pet a mild sedative, be sure to ask for the correct dose depending on the pet's weight. There are natural remedies to cope with stress for pets you should consider those too.

2.Keep your pet in a room in which he/she feels safe. Put there his/her bed, fresh water, food and make sure the room has proper ventilation, but that the pet is not capable to escape.

3.If you have to leave your pet outside, check all fences for loose parts or openings and fix them in order to prevent your pet from escaping through them.

4.Keep your vet's phone number at hand in case of an emergency.

5.Make sure your pet wears his/her collar with ID tag at all times, and that the contact information in the tag is updated.

6.Keep a recent and clear photo of your pet available, in the event of your pet getting lost, you can make flyers and post them everywhere. Remember that a frightened pet can run long distances so he/she may end up far from home and don't know his/her way back. Send the photo to your local paper too, they must have a missing pets section and it can reach more people than the flyers.

Remember this is only the beginning, later comes, Christmas, New Year, 4th of July… Keep these precautions at hand and your pet will do fine.

Pet Rats

Writen by Thomas Morva

For many years, rats remained a hated and feared species that caused plagues and ate into stores of food. During medieval times, people used to employ specialized rat catchers to get rid of these rodents. However, today many rats, rodents and similar species have been domesticated and are kept as pets. The most popular rat species kept as pet is Rattus norvegicus.

Pet rats have an average life span of ranging from two to three years. They are nocturnal creatures and therefore, usually most active at night. Males rats are called bucks, and females are called does, while babies are referred to as pups or kittens. Rats reach puberty at a very young age, usually between six to eight weeks. However, they should not be bred at this early age.

Rats are considered as intelligent, social animals and can make wonderful pets and companions. They are especially popular with children and are easily tamed. They are social and behave best when kept in groups or pairs. For this purpose, same sex pairs or groups are usually ideal. Males usually get along fine with other males, especially if they are kept together from an early age or if they are littermates. It is a misconception that keeping rats in groups will make them more difficult to tame. If the training process begins early, then they learn quickly and generally pose no trouble.

Rats are omnivores and can be fed on fresh foods like rice, vegetables and animal protein. The males are larger and quite a bit lazier than the females and have a coarser coat. Females are smaller and tend to be more active and playful. They are especially known to be friendly with children and are emotional creatures. Rats make good pets and can be treated like any other pet.

Yes Your Dog Will Be Happier If You Use These Dog Grooming Tips

Writen by Niall Cinneide

Most dogs handle their own grooming needs. But, you can offer a helping hand as necessary. If you do this, you will have many benefits to it. For example, it helps the two of you to bond. And, it allows for you to catch diseases or other health problems that can affect your pet. Can't get your dog to sit still long enough? Then, do a small portion of her each day. Eventually she will enjoy it and allow you to do it easily.

Dogs use licking, shaking and scratching to stay clean. If you brush them, you can help the fur to stay clean and unmated. Some dogs that have longer hair will require this attention daily. Others who have shorter hair can be brushed just once a week. Most dogs will enjoy the brushing. Others will not right off the bat. In order to help this process, use the brush in a small amount while talking soothingly to her. Afterwards, give her a treat for being good. Add a little more time on each time.

Dark specs on the skin can be fleas. In order to check for these types of problems, run your hands down here coat as you brush her. If you see quite a bit of black flecks, which are flea dropping, then you need to seek help for your animal right away. You may also notice rice like debris near her tail. These are a sign that the dog has worms. Again, you need to take your pet to the vet in this case as they will need treatment.

Just like you, your pet needs her teeth brushed daily. You can do this using a child sized toothbrush or just a finger toothbrush that is designed for your pet. The paste that you use should be one designed for dogs only. Your toothpaste can seriously make your dog ill. To help keep dog's teeth in tip top shape, give them rawhide chews to gnaw on. This helps keep teeth as well as gums healthy.

You'll need to do other types of grooming as well, but not as frequently. You should check ears and nails weekly or monthly. Look into your dog's ears. If you see small, black/brown specks, this can be ear mites. For nails, walks that are given on sidewalks as well as in the driveway can help to wear them down. Make sure, though, that the nails are not too long. You can learn from your vet the proper way to trim them to help the dog to stay healthy and to walk correctly. You should not trim them without getting some training though.

Cat Litter Box Problems 7 Essential Keys To Solve The Problem Quickly

Writen by Cassandra Mandello

Has this ever happened to you? Your cat's peeing outside the litter box, and you're desperately trying to clean up after your cat, wondering if you're actually doing anything to stop it from happening in the first place!

Well, if you're like me, you probably want some quick solutions to the problem, or at least a list of checkpoints that you know you must, like a detective on a trail, work through, to get the litter box behavior problem under control.

By the time you finish this article, you will have learnt the 7 most important steps you must know, when it comes to this problem of the cat peeing outside the litter box.

Firstly, let's have a look at the reasons why this happens. The reasons for peeing outside the litter box are:

1. A medical problem.

2. The cat that has never been properly house trained to use the litter box in the first place.

3. Problems with the litter tray itself.

4. An unpleasant event that occurred while the cat was at the litter box.

5. A temporary physical or emotional stress, or change in the household causing the cat to urinate in an area outside the box, which is perpetuated by the urine smell reminding the cat to return to the same area over and over again.

6. Old age causing a cat to not be easily able to get to the litter box.

Now, keep these causes in mind, when checking out the 7 action steps:

1. If there's a change in toilet behavior with no obvious cause, it may be caused by illnesses such as urinary tract infections, blocked anal glands, worms and parasites, diabetes and tumors. These illnesses may have no other obvious signs, apart from this urination problem. So you must consider a visit to the vet. In other cases you may see symptoms such as lethargy, blood in the urine, diarrhea, or constant licking in the anal area. If you see this, then your first stop is the vet!

2. Look at the litter box itself. Ensure you're cleaning out the waste once or twice a day, and changing the litter every 3-4 days for non-clumping litter (2-3 weeks for clumping litter). Clean the tray with hot water and mild detergent, without any strong odors such as citrus or ammonia, which will repel the cat from the box. If you have multiple cats, remember - the number of trays should equal number of cats, plus one or two. If you've changed brands of litter, this may have caused the problem as many cats dislike this change, especially to scented litter. Return to the older litter. If you want to change, introduce unscented litter gradually by mixing the old with the new over 2 weeks. And ensure that the location of the box is acceptable: no loud noises, has some privacy, and is not in view of other cats.

3. Consider adding in 1 more litter box to another suitable private location of the house. This is because sometimes it's not the litter box that's the problem, but a negative experience there. For example, if your kids played with the cat while she was on the litter box, or if the cat had pain when urinating, such as during a urine infection, after having kittens, or had a procedure done on the bladder or urethra at the vet, then the cat would associate pain with that litter box. Even if the pain is gone, the association and is still there.

4. Thoroughly clean the area that has been peed on. This is important because no matter what the cause, the fact that the urine remains on the bed, carpet, or sofa is a reminder for the cat to return to pee there. The cat's sense of smell is more acute than ours, so ensure you clean with a solution such as Brampton's Simple Solution. If you have remaining urine smell together with a bad association at the box, then you have 2 forces causing the problem to continue. So get rid of both!

5. Next, if possible, deny the cat access to the area that is peed on, especially if it's an area that is repeatedly used. Many people forget to do this, and their problem is prolonged. By stopping access, the cycle of repeated urination is stopped. Will the cat pee somewhere else? Possible, though less likely if you provide a second litter box, show him where it is a few times, and also do the step 7 below.

6. If you can't stop the cat from accessing the area, make the area less attractive for peeing instead. You can do this by either placing a scent, or, by placing a bowl of dried cat food there. If using a scent, try citrus or eucalyptus. If using dried food, which often works better, ensure that you top up the food bowl during the day. Either way, once you have success, continue for another 1-2 weeks to ensure it stays that way.

7. If you're at home when the cat is, then you have this step up your sleeve as well: the startle technique. Only do this method if you actually catch the cat about to urinate because if you do it at any other time, that cat will not be able to associate that urinating in the area with the unpleasant startle. Startle the cat with a loud "No!" or clap of the hands. Wait 5 minutes, then bring the cat to the litter tray, and if she toilets at the tray, reward her with praise and a food treat. As long as the length and enjoyment of the reward if far greater than the startle, this will be unlikely to cause stress. Use this method carefully as some cats may experience stress with it. Make sure that the cat seems relaxed after the food treat, and that it's actually improving the situation.

If you follow the above steps, most problems of peeing outside the litter box will be solved within days or gradually improve over 1-2 weeks.

Remember in all cases, you'll be even more effective if you reduce stress at the same time. This means more play time and attention.

In conclusion, it does take some effort and detective work to see what has caused the litter box behavior problem in the first place. And you now know how to apply 7 essential steps to help you solve this issue, as quickly and effectively as possible.

Bird Cage Stands

Writen by Ken Marlborough

Like us, birds need variety in life. To be happy and healthy, they need socialization and exercise. This cannot be accomplished if they are cooped up in a cage all day. Birds need time out of the cage to move freely.

Bird cage stands help birds get their required exercise. Similar to a tree, a bird cage stand is a tall structure with several branches for a bird to perch. This simulates the wild and allows the bird to enjoy a bit of freedom. Bird cage stands can also host toys for added play and enjoyment.

This fist type of bird cage stand is especially popular with parrots. With their large wingspan, parrots require more freedom of movement than cages can usually offer. These stands can be found at pet stores and specialty bird supply stores.

Another type of bird cage stand is a base that holds a bird cage. This is usually used for smaller cages and allows them to sit higher in the air. This also makes the cage a bit more mobile, as the stand can be moved from room to room. It can even be moved outside to give the bird more variety in its environment. Without this variety, a bird can become bored and unhappy.

Often, these stands are sold with the bird cage as a single unit. These can be found for under $150, online and at pet stores.

Bird Cages Info provides detailed information in decorative, large, custom, acrylic, antique, wooden, and discount bird cages sale, as well as covers and stands. Bird Cages Info is the sister site of Dog Beds Web.

German Shepherd Kennels

Writen by Ken Marlborough

A German shepherd kennel is home to a variety of Shepherd breeds. Finding a clean kennel where dogs are well cared for is step one. Step two: Choose your ideal dog, and then take good care of him.

Most German shepherd kennels plan their litters well in advance and once you describe the kind of dog you want, they can guide you to the litter that best fits your needs. Some kennels raise puppies indoors, in a clean, climate controlled room. The cost of puppies from these kennels varies according to the type of puppy you choose; companion puppies are cheapest—they're not meant for breeding or sport. A show/sport prospect comes with full AKC registration and breeding rights and can be bred to participate in sports, and to work. Considerably cheaper, but no less loving or lovable are retired dogs, usually five years and older. One thing to keep in mind when choosing price is that show dogs that are "entire" - not spayed or neutered - cost much more than non-entire dogs.

Along with your puppy a kennel will provide proof of the vet exam, AKC papers, health and hip guarantee and a puppy packet that gives you training tips and advice—and booster shots if they are two months or older.

Most kennels are willing to ship puppies to your destination. In that case the puppy will fly in an airline-approved crate; but of course, this costs extra. These crates are generally shipped in cargo along with the other animals in the flight. And the older the puppy, the bigger the crate, so you'll pay more. Some kennels require a non-refundable deposit in exchange for the puppy. But chances are you'll never ask for your money back.

New Book Helps Worried Owners Of A Pregnant Cat

Writen by Marc De Jong

'Help, my cat is pregnant and I don't know what to do!' Not a day goes by without someone posting this message to an Internet forum.

Worried cat owners will know what to do if they read How To Take Care Of Your Pregnant Cat. This new publication is one of the first English-language books in many years exclusively on cat pregnancy.

The author, journalist and long-time cat lover Marc de Jong, is the owner of Cat Pregnancy Report. This web site started in August 2004 and quickly established itself as a very popular site.

'Before I started my site, it was quite difficult to find a comprehensive guide on the Net about pregnancy in cats', says de Jong. 'Many cat sites and forums tell owners only to spay their cat and almost flame people to death if they say their cat got pregnant. Of course they are right when they say there's an overpopulation of cats. However, it's also a fact that millions of cats do get pregnant unplanned. If you don't tell their owners what to do and what to expect, you can endanger the life of these cats.'

Marc de Jong received dozens of e-mails from worried cat owners since he started his site. 'Questions were often so detailed that I had to do a lot of research to answer them. The information I gathered was so valuable that I wanted to share it with all cat lovers.'

Instead of adding it to his already very informative web site, he decided to publish a book. 'Web sites have limitations', de Jong says. 'People tend to scan pages and miss half of the text. They are constantly persuaded to click through to another site. Also, printing a page isn't always easy. And if you have a dial-up account, then the more you read, the more money you pay.'

To give cat owners immediate access to his book he turned How To Take Care Of Your Pregnant Cat into an e-book, a digital publication downloadable from his web site. He added extra value by interviewing award-winning breeders and veterinarians specialized in cats. Their insider tips are all in the book.

How To Take Care Of Your Pregnant Cat covers almost every subject related to pregnancy in cats. Heat cycles, mating, signs of cat pregnancy, food, care, birth, raising kittens ... it's all there.

'The first response from readers is very good', says the author. 'There's no doubt the book is a great help for owners of a pregnant cat.'

According to Texas A&M University, numerous studies show that pets provide undisputed medical benefits:

(1) Dog owners have lower blood pressure. It only takes 10 minutes in the company of a dog to significantly reduce blood pressure rates.

(2) Owning a dog is estimated to decrease heart attack mortality rates by 3% - many thousands of lives a year.

(3) Dog owners have lower triglyceride and cholesterol levels than non-dog owners.

(4) In a study of Medicare patients, dog owners made 21% fewer trips to a physician.

(5) Children exposed to dogs during their first years of life have a lower frequency of some allergies and asthma.

(6) Pet owners have better overall physical health due to exercise with their pets.

So what's your excuse? Dogs make wonderful trail companions and it is a hobby you can do anywhere, at anytime of the year.

For dog owners it is important to realize that not all parks are open to our four-legged friends. it is sometimes hard for dog owners to believe but not everyone loves dogs. We are, in fact, in the minority when compared with our non-dog-owning neighbors. As such, rules can change rapidly to ban dogs from even more of our public parks. It doesn't take a referendum or a ballot count for "NO DOGS" signs to appear overnight.

So make sure your dog is a good citizen on the trail - don't bother other hikers and pick up after him - and you will be embarking on a passion that will last a lifetime.

Get fit - grab a leash and hit the trail!

Condo Commandos 101 How To Stop Condo Boards Amp Hoa Boards From Ruining Your Life

Writen by Dr. Joyce Starr

Are you the victim or potential victim of a Condo Commando or Home Owner Association (HOA) attack, including arbitrary legal actions and "SLAPP Suits"?

Has your life become their hobby?

If you're caught up in a stressful, anxious or depressive Condo Board or HOA situation, I know exactly how you feel.

It's like being trapped in a choking fog. You feel disconnected from reality and can't see a way out.

It doesn't matter how much you sleep, the fear and exhaustion of losing your savings, income, beloved pet or home just won't go away.

And hardly anyone knows or even understands what you're going through.

Neighbors avoid you, while condo snitches report your every word back to the Board.

I've experienced it all.

After a complex and protracted 18-month Arbitration enforcement battle – which cost my Condo Association over $20,000 - I won the right to keep my pet cat, a rare condo owner victory in a landmark case.

Indeed, this cat victory put our condo board squarely in the doghouse - revealing scandalous motives and actions. A recall action is now in progress.

My journey began when I raised an alarm about the presence of toxic mold in the condo corridors and common areas. I soon discovered how condo commandos victimize "whistleblowers."

But this struggle is also experienced daily across the country by thousands of condo owners & HOA members. "Your story is a mirror of my own," writes Yolanda, whose inadvertent failure to pay a $4 condo fee increase resulted in a lien on her home.

Perhaps you were told that the only way to treat this condo or HOA "illness" is by hiring a pricey attorney, and/or losing your home/pets/rights. "Take these steps and you'll survive."

Friends asked: "Why couldn't you just roll over and play dead?"

But I'm living proof of this FACT: Frivolous, means-spirited, vindictive Condo Commando & HOA attacks can be thwarted WITHOUT losing your mind, life savings or dignity.

You can survive the condo commando or HOA nightmare and prevail.

Once you discover how to deal with Condo Board or HOA Board abuse, this modern day plague can no longer spoil the happiness you so deserve.

Dogs And Their Allergies

Writen by Jessica Mercier

A former coworker has a dog that had begun itching and scratching incessantly. So much so, he had worn away a lot of his fur. She took him to the vet suspecting fleas; as it turned out, he was allergic to wheat which is in many dog treats and foods.

When we started our dog treat business, we gave out some samples to dog owners we know and she had to turn them away so her beloved Snoopy wouldn't get sick.

Many dogs have problems with wheat, onions and garlic. If your dog has any strange behaviors or illnesses following consumption of a new food or treat, you may wish to consult your veterinarian to rule out an allergy.

Other items that your dogs should NEVER EVER eat, but would if given the opportunity, is CHOCOLATE! Chocolate contains harmful chemicals theobromine, caffeine and theophylline. If consumed, death is not certain but a trip to the vet will perhaps be necessary. We use carob or yogurt chips to offer a sweet and safe alternative.

In the meantime, we at Abby's Dog Treat Bakery have developed several wheat, garlic and onion free treats as we believe all dogs should have access to delicious, wholesome, home-baked treats.

J.R. Mercier is a freelance writer and is co-owner of Abby's Dog Gift Baskets and Abby's Dog Treat Bakery. Abby's is web-based business founded on a healthy, happy, dog and dog owner.

Help With Dog Training

Writen by Michael Russell

Dogs are considered to be man's best friend so understandably, getting a dog or puppy is always an exciting experience for every family. However, getting a puppy is one thing, but training him to be an understanding and obedient part of the family, is another. Dog training requires some necessary skills and attitudes to be effective; you will learn most of these as you train your dog. It is always better to opt to train your dog personally, though there is nothing wrong with hiring a professional dog trainer to handle the task. Both have merits and perhaps, disadvantages.

Though, you may be prone to mistakes and inconsistencies along the way, training your dog yourself could be a very effective way of establishing that important communication between you. You also learn how your dog reacts to some situations and what triggers some actions, like barking. On the other hand, employing the services of a professional brings you instant results and takes away the "trial and error" process that is mostly experienced in personally training your dog.

Some people will advise a blend of the two. Training your dog yourself, but joining a professional dog training class. This achieves several ends, you can describe it as 'eating your cake and still keeping it'. The training class reduces the cost of employing direct professional services but still provides you with professional direction for home training of your dog. Thus, it does not deprive you of the 'bonding' and understanding that is established each time you and your dog start that training session.

No matter how you want to go about your dog's training, patience, the environment and rewards/praises are vital factors that will greatly affect the success of your efforts.

Patience, in the sense that you are trying to communicate with an animal that doesn't speak the same language or employ the same communication methods as you do. Whenever you get stuck with training your dog, when you feel your efforts are not yielding any results, remember that you wouldn't fare better if asked to bark. It is going to take time before you can make you dog sit, by just saying the word, that is not his natural language. A lot of repetitions and praising your dog each time he does it right will reap results.

Dogs are naturally excited by their environments and they tend to get easily distracted. Imagine what happens when a cat cruises past the front of your dog during a training session; he is bound to get distracted. Your dog's training session will be much more fruitful if you can have your training sessions in a quiet environment with less distraction. You can progress to noisier environments for more advanced obedience training, when you have your dog well grounded in basic obedience training.

As man's friend, dogs seek to always make their owners happy and satisfied. The training sessions with your dog will be more fruitful if you let your dog know when you are satisfied. Rewarding your dog with cuddles or a treat when he gets it right, shows the dog you are happy with his conduct and reinforces that action in the dog.

Dog training can be quite a challenge, but if you follow the tips here, the task will be much easier.

Know Whether Your Dogs Food Is Healthy

Writen by Huzef Saifee

It is necessary to know the essentials dogs' nutrition because it is the key to their wellbeing. Lacks of these ingredients affect their health adversely and they loose not only their strength but also their charms.

In this era of rapid industrial growth and processed foods for men and animal the risk of allergies has grown too high. Since most of these commercial foods according to experts are wanting in essential and most fundamental vitamins and eventually cause health hazards to your pets. If you feed your dogs such foods for a longer span of time they become prone to defective adrenal glands that blocks cortisol production which is the defending force against the diseases.

So it is necessary to for those who have pet dogs to keep a systematic track of whether their dogs are having healthy food or not. This could be accurately achieved if you observe that following things are all right with your dog.

He loves to have the food that you are giving it.
His teeth are shining and clean.
His breath has no odor.
He has no gastric problem.
His coat well grown.
He is fresh, energetic and agile.
He has no ear, nose and throat problem.
His defense system works effectively.

If by chance any of the above-mentioned things is wrong with your dog then it is an alarm that something is wrong with the types and qualities of food you are providing it. Be prompt to change the food to avoid serious complication in future. Always keep it in your mind that stray cases of problems are not a matter of worry it is only worth noticing when the same symptoms occur frequently and for a longer period.

Always remember that fresh food is the healthiest food. So feed your pet dog fresh quality food. If you have to store foods for them for long duration then store them in deep freezers. Cheap foods which are shown by advertising agencies to be affordable and reasonable are most unreliable and could be cause of nutrition deficiency in your pet.

Ears Stand Corrected Cosmetic Surgery And Pets

Writen by Ryan Joseph

Are you irritated by your dog's drooping ears or your kitty's tail which is capable of sweaping off a coffee table in a mere second? Is your puppy being too loud and your Calico scratching a bit too much? In our society, there are so many cosmetic procedures that have the capability of transforming our pets into the best citizens of their kind, into members of other breeds or into denizens of imaginary breeds.

Some could even say that these cosmetic surgeries enhance the overall quality of a pet's life while others could possibly state that these procedures are mean-spirited, ego driven and more for the benefit of the pet owners than for the pets well being.

Cosmetic surgery for pets is not at all a recent idea. In the late 1800's and the early twentieth century cosmetic surgery or alteration was a normal practice, most especially in the cat show world.

Such techniques as tail bobbing and ear reducing to produce the deceptive image of another breed were practices used regularly.

And there are other cosmetic procedures for pets that sound like procedures for people. We are not the only creatures who can get a tummy tuck. This is done especially for health purposes, as some animal breeds are indeed more vulnerable to infection and so forth. Your pet could even have liposuction done. And that is not nearly the end of it. There is also the changing of eyelids to alter eye shape and face lifts which alter the pet's face. And for show pets there are prosthetic testicles for dogs as well as laser depilation for the looks of "hairless" cats.

Holistic Vet Dr. Jane Bicks has performed her share of these surgeries. At one time she gave a face lift to a dog who had facial folds so pronounced his eyes were part covered over! She had to rid the dog's face of its unpleasing folds and in the end the eyes looked around two times as big as before the procedure.

She also did a nose job on her horse, a horse whom that she had rescued and who had a mangled nose. She replaced the nose and stitched it back on while not changing the natural style.

Some animal advocates say there is a morality issue doing this to pets who did not request it done and who did not concur with it(or the actual pain that goes along with it) just to look a certain way. It is really somewhat surprising all the other cosmetic surgery procedures that are done on a regular. Wireless Dog Fences

Writen by Ross Bainbridge

The wireless dog fence is a new addition to pet containment systems. It is more effective than other types of fence systems. As this type of dog fence has no wires to bury its installation procedures are simple and easy.

A wireless dog fence uses single transmitters or multiple transmitters. The first step to install a wireless dog fence is to plug in the transmitter. As these transmitters are capable of producing radio signals that can penetrate walls and other household obstacles, they can be positioned in any suitable location of your home. The dog wears a pet-collar that produces a warning beep when it comes near the boundary. The collar applies a mild electric shock if your pet still continues to cross the boundary area. The containment area is adjusted by using a small dial.

The two most important types of wireless dog fences e are the outdoor wireless dog fence (instant fence) and indoor wireless dog fence. The instant fence features a waterproof receiver, six adjustable levels of correction, portability and a low battery indicator light. Indoor wireless dog fenced also offer safety and portability. In this type of containment system, a transmitter in the shape of a disk is placed in the area you want protected. Dog mat is a special type of training pad that is used to train your pets to protect them from prohibited areas.

Most of the online authorized retailers of dog fences offer free shipping services to their customers. Some of the retailers also provide a warranty and money back guarantee for their products.

Dog Fences provides detailed information on Dog Fences, Electric Dog Fences, Invisible Dog Fences, Wireless Dog Fences and more. Dog Fences is affiliated with Wire Dog Containment Systems.

Shih Tzu Training Words Of Consistent And Great Meaning

Writen by Connie Limon

When you first begin to talk to your shih tzu, I feel like the shih tzu will find your voice new and interesting. The shih tzu has been use to the voice of the breeder and whoever else had contact. This newness will soon wear off and your voice will become one of great familiarity to your shih tzu. By this time if you have not started to teach your shih tzu that words can have great and wonderful meanings you might have a harder time regaining the shih tzu's attention when you are engaged in training lessons. The first step is to teach your dog its new name and to say the new name before an enjoyable event such as a walk will hopefully convince your shih tzu that it is worthwhile to listen to all you have to say.

It is fine to have meaningless conversations with your shih tzu and even to pour your heart out to your shih tzu if you so desire, or to murmur sweet nonsense while you pet her. Words you want to have actual meaning for the shih tzu should "always" have that same meaning.

An interesting memory I have of my Coconut (who is still with me at Stain Glass Shih Tzu and pictured in this article) is that in a very particularly frustrating time for me I was crying aloud. Out of all the shih tzu (who are by nature very compassionate), Coconut came to me quickly when I sat down, jumped in my lap and took her paws and patted my each side of my cheeks. I could hear her saying with her body language of compassionate pets on my face: "please cheer up ma-ma, it is not so bad, I love you, now just stop that crying, my ma-ma." And I immediately stopped the tears and chuckled at her, hugged her up close and was quite cheered up, relieved from the frustration I was just feeling. Now this same Coconut has done things that have truly annoyed me, but at this moment in time, we bonded in such a unique and special way, it has strengthened me to endure those times she annoys me.....

Shih tzu understand so much more than we realize they do about their owners, and their loved ones. Still, there are certain words you will need to teach your shih tzu that will always have that same meaning. These words would be your basic cues for behaviors you want such as "sit," and use it only when you actually mean for your shih tzu to "sit."

Keep Your Pets Fit And Healthy

Writen by Paul Cris

All living beings have common necessities of air, water and food to survive. Similarly, they need to be physically fit at all times. Only the exercise programs differ from species to species.

Before scheduling a workout program for your pet consult your veterinarian. Ensure that your pet is in good health and fit to start off with an exercise program. Playing is an amazing activity for the pets and for you.

At the start, moderate paced walking or running will work out better. This will lead to a healthy cardiovascular functioning and strengthening of the muscles. Even swimming is a fabulous program for the dogs. Do not enforce stressful exercises on them as they may face ligament tear or stressful tendon problems. Keep them away from the other pets to avoid violent activities between them. A smooth surface like grass or muddy paths will give them comfort to continue their activities. A hard concrete surface causes irritation to their paws. When the outdoor temperature is extreme, such as freezing cold or extreme heat, then continue these activities indoors.

When you have tamed a cat, the kind of care will differ. Do not entertain them on smooth surfaces like couches or beds. Cats are of an idle nature compared to dogs, so a regular steady workout session will not work out for them. Allow them to climb ceilings, terraces or trees and do not stop them even if they are behaving mischievously. The cat is most fond of chasing and battling things that are tossed and loves hiding in large cartons, boxes or under the stretched carpet.

There are many other exotic pets apart from cats and dogs like small birds, mice, or turtles, which are always trapped in a cage. You must encourage them to move around for at least some time because they lose their muscle tone and become passive. Let them explore the life style in your drawing room or bedroom. Some creatures like pigs, hedgehogs or reptiles are just manic about swimming. Take pets like guinea pigs or hares for a stroll with a lace on their necks.

Accompanying your pets on an exercise program is indeed one of the best exercise activities for you too.

Dog Training Collars Proper Selection Leads To Training Success

Writen by David Dunlap

The proper selection of a training collar can have a significant impact on the success of any dog training program. Most new dog trainers make the mistake of choosing a dog collar that does not allow for adequate control during the training sessions.

During my nearly four years of working with dogs, I have seen dog collars in numerous sizes and shapes. From head leaders to pronged choke collars, the choices available to dog owners are endless. However, in my training experience, I have not seen a dog training collar as effective as the classic choke collar.

The basic choke collar is an effective training tool that can be used on almost any size dog (for very small dogs, a nylon dog collar might be preferred). When used properly, the correction and response of the dog is almost immediate.

The key to using a choke collar effectively is to keep the dog collar loose when the dog is exhibiting proper behavior. For example, if the dog is heeling without pulling ahead, the choke collar should remain loose. If the dog begins to pull ahead, a quick "pop" or tightening of the collar will teach the dog that unwanted behavior has occurred. As soon as the dog's behavior has corrected, the collar is once again loosened.

By using the tightening & loosening technique, the dog quickly learns to associate good behavior with a loose collar. If the collar were to remain constantly tightened, the dog would only learn to fight against the choking feeling.

Regardless of which collar type you choose, it is imperative that the dog collar fit properly and give you, the trainer, maximum control over the dog.

For nearly four years, David Dunlap has been working & training dogs from puppyhood to more advanced levels. For more information on dog collars, visit http://simplydogcollars.com

How To Train Your Dog To Sit

Writen by Jon Weaver

Training your dog to sit is one of the most basic skills, and also sets the foundation for many others. Here is exactly what should happen: the moment the guide stops, the dog should sit close to his left side. And here is exactly how to go about training your dog:

Hold the leash tightly in both hands, with the right hand at the side, and with a loose grip in the left hand at the left side. But do not slip the hand through the loop at the leash end.

Walk forward and stop suddenly, at the same time giving in a sharp voice the command SIT. Drop the leash from the left hand. Still holding the leash in a tight grip raise the right hand, and at that moment press the lower part of the dog's back to the ground with the left hand while repeating the command SIT.

The guide should then assume a standing position, once more with the command SIT. Throughout this procedure, avoid changing the position of your feet. The dog should still be at your left side.

What is the dog's reaction? He will attempt to get up on his feet, to jump to one side, possibly to lie down or sit sidewise.

Here are the corrections: This exercise offers little difficulty when executed correctly, though failure may be traced to various inconsistencies on the part of the guide. Very likely the guide loosened his hold on the leash with his right hand and did not hold the dog up on his front feet as he pressed him into the sitting position, or possibly he changed the position of his feet and therefore found himself facing the dog. Also, he may have confused the dog with too many commands.

The command ought not to be used more than three times: first, at the instant of stopping; second, while the dog is being pushed into a sitting position; and third, when the dog has assumed the desired sitting position. Of importance is it for the guide to watch the action of his hands so as to be sure he holds them exactly as described.

The dog is now in a sitting position at the left side of the guide, and so long as the guide remains quiet, the dog will not move. Give him now a few words of praise and a pat with the left hand, while you still hold the same position with ease.

Should the dog try to sit sidewise and removed from you, place your left hand against his left side when pressing him into the sitting position and in that way nudge him closer to you.

Repeat this exercise several times while in standing position. Then walk again and suddenly stop with the command SIT. By now, the dog will probably assume the correct sitting position without further influence and aided only by the single command.

When the dog executes this lesson correctly -- and of course it must be repeated over and over again -- don't forget those words of praise. If for a few times he responds readily and then fails, be patient and help him again by pulling him up with the right hand, and pushing him down with the left.

It requires several days and repetitious practise before a dog becomes a competent "sitter." But always remain patient and loving, and sooner than you think, your dog will sit on command and desire to move on to new commands.

17 Tips Thatll Safeguard You And Your Family From Dog Bites Or Attack

Writen by Robin Shortt

Did you know that more than one million north americans will be bitten by dogs this year, and about one million dog bites will go unreported.

Its sad but most of the victims will be children. These dog bites will come from animals known to them. Unleashed dogs will account for most of the bites inflicted.

What Makes Dogs Bite

Not being educated and pet owners not being committed on training their pet is what leads to most of these dog bites. We must realize that dogs don't normally become a part of our families already trained.

Why Then Do Dogs Bite?

1. They will bite if scared, angry, or threatened. Even a dog thats friendly will bite.

2. If he feels he's cornered or crowded.

3. They will protect what they think belongs to them. Like their food, toys.

4. Dogs will protect their space such as sleeping area, yard, porch, cars and home.

5. Dogs are predatory by nature and love to chase and attack.

6. A stray dog may feel upset being lost or hurt and bite with alot less provocation.

7. A dog being startled may lash out and bite.

How to Prevent Bites

8. Teaching young children to be careful around pets. Don't allow children to play rough or allow pupies to bite. Not even play biting.

9. Teach your children never get close to strange dogs.

10. Leave a dogs things alone like food, toys, bones, ect.

11. Most injuries are caused by getting too close to a dogs face with your own.

12. Refain from running past a dog. They love to chase. Avoid getting a dog excited or aggressive, by yelling and screaming.

13. You never want to pet a dog thats eating, sleeping or careing for its puppies.

14. Stay away from dogs that are tied up or in cars.

15. You should always ask permission from a pet owner to pet his dog. Even if he's present and the dog's on a leash.

16. Refrain from swinging your arms or things you have at a dog. It may think its an invitation to bite.

17. You should never pet stray dogs or ones running loose.

Its great to have a dog go on a hike or walk on a trail with you but we humans need to treat dogs with respect. Just remember to teach your children how act around dogs, it will keep them safe.

Traveling With Petsanother Big Problem

Writen by Roy MacNaughton

It was a warm, tropical night with soft sea breezes, the sounds of a million night frogs, and the heavy scent of hibiscus hanging on that breeze. My wife and I had just arrived in the twin-island republic of Trinidad & Tobago in the West Indies. We were the guests of the local government, staying at a famous resort hotel, located in 25 acres of landscaped gardens. We had just finished dinner and decided to take a romantic stroll in the moonlight to absorb the sensory reality that is the tropics.

As we crossed a manicured lawn walkway, in the headlights of an approaching taxi we could see a large 'mound' that, as we got closer and could see better, seemed to be unexplainably moving. The mound was moving!

Then--now that we could see clearly--we understood. This 'mound' was animal excrement; and it was totally covered by moving Trinidadian cock roaches! We went back into the hotel but on our way back to the lobby and pool area, we spotted at least four other piles of such waste. Now it was quite difficult to keep our dinner down.

The local dogs run on the property depositing their business at all hours. Naturally this immediately attracted all manner of insects, particularly the tropical variety of cockroach. These guys fly in like B-52's. Locals say you have to watch they don't carry off your cat.

This true story came to mind when friends in the lodging business asked me to research a new burgeoning market segment: guests traveling with their pets. The pet industry is booming like never before. Lodging operators have realized that millions of pet owners want to travel with their pet. There are more than a dozen pet-friendly directories on the web, comprised of lodging establishments that welcome guests with pets. When trip planning, simply click on these web-based pet-friendly directories and determine which hotels on your route, or at your intended destination, accept pets with the guest in the room.

But let me pause for the cause, for just a moment of reality. Getting as basic as I can here--to make my point--one thing we know for sure is that dogs and cats, like we humans, have to eat and they have to--well you get the picture. The question raises itself. How does a hotel owner manage this potential mountain of pet poop? The answer rises to the appropriate occasion: someone had to invent a very special plastic totally biodegradable doggie bag. One that conveniently assists the pet owner in picking up after his pet and allowing him to dispose of this unwanted waste in such a manner that the plastic bag and its contents totally degrade into nothing but CO2, water and humic matter, when it is put in the landfill or the composting containers. These people originally began marketing plastic biodegradable trash bags and bags for carrying home the groceries from the supermarket.

Let's face it: if a hotel is going to appeal to and welcome guests traveling with their pets, that hotel is going to have to manage the poop problem. Whether inside the room as in the case with the kitty box, or outside the room on the hotel grounds, in the expensive shrubs and flower beds, or on the manicured lawns, "poop management" can be a big problem…or opportunity for the hotel owner.

Many hotels provide those guests with one or three of these branded doggie bags upon check-in. Some have also added some explanatory information about their environmentally-friendly poop management program in the guest room. Now when you travel with your pet, you'll see that the real smart hotels are concerned about the environment and are carefully handling such waste. This sends another positive message to you—including those without pets—that this hotel, inn or resort is really professional and caring for the safety and comfort of all its guests.

A Guide To Home Made Pet Odor Cures

Writen by Michael Louis

No matter how lovable our furry creatures look and act, it's still an undeniable fact that most of them – unless they're bathed in expensive perfume 24/7 like pampered pooches of millionaires – have the propensity to give off a rather distinctive and unpleasant odor.

Naturally, all dog owners would wish to keep that from contaminating their homes. It's why dog odor cures are highly in demand nowadays.

At present, the effectiveness of home made pet odor cures is still in question; no one has yet been unable to prove if there is really a home-made solution or spray that can get rid of pet odor. You are however welcome to try out the following suggestions:

Baking Soda and Water – Mix the two components together then saturate the areas that possess the distinct animal-related smell. Let it spread for a few minutes then blot the stained area with paper towels. Wait for the air to dry out any remaining moisture before trying to sniff for changes. Washable items like clothes and other stuff may also take advantage of the effective cleaning powers of baking soda. Just place a pound of baking soda in the washing machine, wait for it to do its job and voila! You're done!

You can also try leaving the baking soda on the areas overnight. On the next day, clean it with a vinegar wash before rinsing the affected areas completely. By this time, the odor must be all gone already but only to be replaced by the equally undesirable smell of vinegar. You don't need to feel so glum however as the smell of vinegar will evaporate by itself afterwards and leave without harming anything or anyone.

Scented Vacuum Cleaner – With this method, you can kill two birds with one stone: eliminating dirt and odor from your home. Place a flagrant dryer sheet near the exhaust vent of your vacuum. Then start cleaning tirelessly and thoroughly. Once you've turned off the vacuum cleaner, you'll no doubt be able to see the changes it made to your home, smell-wise among other things.

Other Tips to Reduce or Eliminate Pet Odor

Pet odor can sometimes be directly the result of poor house training for the dog or lack of housekeeping skills and initiative. The moment your dog urinates or does the unspeakable act of #2, you should instantly clean the affected areas to prevent the urine or feces from committing more damage. So don't be lazy when cleaning after your dog. It's a pain, for sure, but it's a pain that you have no choice but to tolerate.

Use easily washable and comfortable tablecloth as it's not one of the most favorite textures of pets. Using them will discourage your pets from marking the territory as his private domain. Create a bathroom area for your pet and periodically lead him to it until he realizes that he has to answer nature's call there.

The best home made pet odor cure is subjecting your pets to proper training. Their lessons must teach them how to take care of their pets and how much food you should prepare for them. Choose floors that will not easily soak up liquid as it can aggravate the situation and cause the pet stains to reek more than usual.

After cleaning pet stains, it's always better to spray some perfume or scented air freshener to return your home into its normal sweet-smelling state!

Grooming Your Great Dane

Writen by Jen Carter

Bathing

Unlike humans, who shower on a daily basis, your Great Dane should be bathed on a "as needed" basis. The frequency of bathing varies depending on the individual pet. Naturally, you'll want to wash your Great Dane when his appearance is unkempt or when he starts to give off an odor. In the colder months, never wash your Great Dane and let him go outside afterwards. Make sure that he is completely dry first, as this will prevent him from getting sick. NEVER use shampoo intended for human use. Dog shampoos are specially formulated for your Dane's skin, which is very sensitive. Human shampoos can cause excessive drying and skin irritations. Take precautions when washing your Great Dane to make sure shampoo doesn't get in their eyes.

Brushing

You should introduce a dog brush to your Great Dane when he is a puppy. Let him get comfortable with brushing early and he'll look forward to it as he matures. Brushing will prevent matted hair and remove excess fur. It will also remove pet dander, preventing build-up on your dog's skin and coat.

Ears

Examine your pets ears regularly for dirt and wax. Use a soft cotton ball on the ear. Never lodge the cotton ball into the ear. NEVER stick a Q-tip in your Great Danes ear. The cotton applicator can damage his ear drum to an irreparable state. If you're unsure how to clean your pet's ears, ask your veterinarian to demonstrate for you.

Nails

It's very important to keep your Great Dane's nails trimmed. Remember, there are veins in the nails. If you've never clipped a dog's nails before, take him to a groomer. When you feel more comfortable you can purchase clippers and do it from the comfort of your own home. Failure to keep your Dane's nails clipped can result in painful in-grown nails. Prevent your Great Dane from experiencing such pain and/or infection by keeping up with their nails.

How To Rid Skin Allergies For Dogs

Writen by Kelly Marshall

Perhaps you have noticed your dog seems to be scratching more than usual or maybe they are licking their legs or feet consistently. You have probably checked for fleas, and have found nothing. It is very likely that your dog has developed a skin allergy. Skin allergies are very common in most dogs but some breeds are more prone to skin allergies than others. Golden retrievers, Poodles, Dalmatians, Boxers and Terriers can often have difficulties with these conditions. Dogs with double coats such as Akitas, Chows, Newfoundlands and other dogs are also potentially at greater risk as the double coat holds allergens to the skin and allows bacterial growth to occur more readily than in a single-coated dog breed.

Symptoms Of A Skin Allergy

Dogs will often display one or more of the following symptoms when they have a skin allergy:

1. Biting or chewing at the skin
2. Licking of the feet, legs and belly area
3. Rubbing of the head
4. Scratching
5. Bare patches of skin
6. Irritated or red patches
7. Dry or flaky skin

The behavior will come and go depending on the exposure to the particular allergen. The exposure can be through mites, fleas, insects, the environment, cleaning products, changes in diets or medications. The dog first encounters the irritating compound and the body begins to build antibodies to attack the substance the next time the dog is exposed. They body simply overreacts to the exposure causing irritation and the behaviors listed above.

How To Control Allergies

Just like with humans there is no way to "cure" allergies, rather there are some ways to manage the allergies and control the environment to minimize the contact between the dog and the allergen.

The first step is to try to find out what the cause of the allergy may be. Look for any chemicals or perfumes that may be in the area. Pot pourri, air fresheners, carpet shampoos, dog shampoos or even paint or wallpaper or new carpeting can often trigger allergic reactions. Try to find new items or products being used in the house and eliminate them if possible.

Food items can also cause allergies that appear to be skin related. If the dog has recently had a change in diet or has started to eat plants or vegetation in the yard try changing the diet to the previous food or keeping the dog indoors for a few days to see if the allergy goes away. Often a diet that avoids commercially prepared foods and relies on more natural foods or foods specially formulated for allergies will provide good control and management of symptoms.

Seasonal allergies can often be controlled with small environmental changes and the use of antihistamines. A vet can prescribe and monitor the use of antihistamines for the dog, never use human medications, as there can be other serious health risks for your dog or puppy. For dogs with chronic skin allergies there are vaccinations that can be administered by your vet that will provide protection for several weeks per shot.

Skin allergies are serious and can lead to bacterial infections and other conditions as the dog's immune system is weakened. Be sure to talk to your vet about managing the allergies to keep your dog happy and healthy.

Protection Dog Training Frequently Asked Questions

Writen by Tyler Brown

Is a protection dog mean?

A well trained protection dog is social with everyone. A well trained protection dog does not interpret situations to show aggression, but rather waits for his owners command before using force.

Will a protection dog also be a watchdog and bark at everyone who comes to my door?

This depends on the training. A good trainer can develop a dog's natural tendencies to customize the training to your situation.

Is a protection dog good to live in the house?

Dogs trained for protection such as German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, and Rottweilers are very adaptable and are just as capable living in an apartment as they are on a ranch. Regardless of where they live they should get adequate exercise.

Will a protection dog be good with my kids?

Some dogs are better than others with kids. Work with a qualified trainer to make sure that your dog will be fine with your kids. It is also important to note that children should be taught proper dog etiquette and should be supervised when around any dog.

Will a protection dog bite someone without my command?

A well trained protection dog will bite only on command. Unfortunately, there are many dog trainers who do a sub-par training job with protection dogs. Make sure you are getting your protection dog from a reputable trainer

How much does a protection dog cost?

If you buy a trained dog the cost will vary greatly. Factors will be age of dog, titles the dog has earned, look of the dog, amount of training, etc. A young dog with basic training can be bought for a few thousand while a dog with working titles and extensive additional training may cost $20,000 and up.

I don't have any particular threats. Should I get a protection dog?

Many people that purchase protection dogs haven't had break-ins or stalkers or previous violent attacks. They value the benefits of a great pet who would be able to handle a violent situation were it to ever arise. People that shouldn't get a protection dog are people that want to use them as an offensive weapon. These dogs should only be owned by responsible, mature people who want the dogs as a crime deterrent and last line of defense.

Are there specific laws that deal with protection dogs?

Yes. Certain cities require a special registration for protection dogs. Certain areas also have breed specific legislation which deals with restrictions for certain breeds. Check with your city and county offices for specific laws and ordinances.

Dog Nutrition The Dos And Donts Of Dog Feeding

Writen by Nancy Settecasi

Proper dog nutrition is not categorized the same for all ages, sizes and breeds. Each breed has it's dietary recommendation as well as the suggested number of feedings per day. These recommendations can also be customized to the size and age group of your dog. However, there are some general guidelines you can follow in order to provide proper dog nutrition with a balanced diet. A dog's protein intake depends highly on his age. Your dog won't need more than 25 percent if he's a puppy or over 22 percent for dogs that get moderate exercise, although, older dogs will require more. Consult your vet for the proper protein intake for your dog. Many dog foods also contain a high amount of salt. Read the label on your dog's food to make sure he/she is not getting too much salt because it can result in heart disease.

Most dogs are fed two times a day. Some prefer to eat once a day. Your dog will display to you which he prefers simply by refusing to eat during one of his feedings. Puppies, however, require three to four feedings per day in order to develop bone growth and provide proper dog nutrition.

Never feed your dog table scraps under any circumstances. If your dog has been prescribed a special diet by the veterinarian, which requires you to cook your dog's meals, be sure to place the food directly into your dog's bowl. Avoid feeding your dog directly from the dinner table. Your dog will not only develop obesity but it will also encourage begging.

One thing about dogs is that they can eat, and eat, and eat, and eat and never know when they are full. Avoid giving your dog too much to eat. Once a dog becomes obese, it is very difficult to make them lose weight. Your dog can also develop a host of medical problems, such as high blood sugar, abnormal bone development, diabetes, heart problems, just to name a few.

Choose a reputable, high quality, dry dog food with the recommended daily allowance for your dog's age, breed, size and weight. You can obtain this information from your vet.

Along with daily feedings, give your dog a multi-vitamin in order to promote good health and normal growth.

Feed your dog in a stainless steel bowl. Be sure to clean your dog's bowl with soap and water every day or two. These bowls are a breeding ground for bacteria. Plastic and ceramic bowls are not recommended.

Your dog should always have water in his bowl, although, while training, you can remove the water bowl at night in order to lessen the probability of night-time urinating.

Offer your dog bite-sized snacks throughout the day for training purposes. Don't overdo the snacks.

Proper dog nutrition is necessary in helping to keep your dog's health in check and preventing costly trips to the vet.

Down And Ducky

Writen by Marilyn Mackenzie

When the guy at the carnival told my son that ducks made fantastic pets, I wanted to shoot him. We had just moved to over an acre of land, and since my son was being home schooled, it did seem like a good idea to introduce him to another life form besides dogs and cats. I forgot that mothers usually end up taking care of pets.

To this day, I wonder if it would have been as much fun to have only one duck. That carnival guy talked us into buying two ducks so they could keep each other company. We didn't know we were buying a male and female, though, nor that ducks often breed as much as rabbits. That we learned much later.

It was fun having those ducks around. The male duck promptly bonded with our dogs and after we had a bunch of baby ducks running around the property, we changed his name to "Daddy Guard Duck." The female was just "Mamma Duck."

Each morning at the crack of dawn, our ducks appeared on the back porch. We never did know where they slept. But they appeared bright and early each morning, quacking, pooping, and knocking at our sliding door. That's right, the ducks knocked at the door to let us know it was time for them to eat.

Someone had shared that dry dog food was good for ducks, so we would grind some up each morning in our blender. As we took it to the middle of the yard, the ducks followed us quacking all the while.

After eating, both ducks headed for the small wading pool we had placed in the yard. The male simply jumped in and jumped out. That was the extent of his bathing or swimming. The female loved water, though, and spent hours and hours splashing in the small pool.

Meanwhile, the male played with our dogs. (They were all small dogs - the result of a YorkiePoo and Shi-Tzu mating.) Sometimes Daddy Guard Duck chased the dogs; sometimes they chased him. But when the mailman or UPS driver or some other delivery van appeared on our cul-de-sac, each of them - dogs and Daddy Guard Duck - ran to the fence to bark and quack. That's how the duck got his name. He was just as good as our dogs at alerting us to strangers on or near the property.

When Mamma was sitting on eggs, Daddy did his duty. He sat on the eggs while Mamma took her bath each morning. If she took too long - everyday, in Daddy Guard Duck's opinion - he would quack and quack, getting louder and louder as she ignored him.

Then when the babies arrived, Daddy really played his role well. He guarded his babies and wouldn't let the dogs even in sniffing distance. Once they were a bit grown, Daddy set out to teach his sons how to guard and left the raising of the daughters to Mamma.

We really couldn't keep eighteen ducks on our acre of property, so we took the babies to a farmer down the road who promised to allow the ducks to roam his yard and huge pond. He was true to his promise. When a second batch of baby ducks were grown, they followed the first ones to our farmer friend's homestead. And, eventually, that same farmer took Mamma and Daddy to live on his property as well. Our family was better for having the experience of raising a few (dozen) ducks.

***********

And then, some years later, my sister's husband brought home a duck for his family to love. He honestly thought that my sister would let that duck live in the river in back of their home.

It was cold when that baby duck came to live with them, and my sister insisted that the duck take up residence in the master bathroom. It has been about two years now, and that duck, while he likes to go outside, still sleeps in the bathroom. He's definitely a house duck, and not a river duck. And he is none too happy when someone wants to shower or otherwise use his bathroom. As boisterous as he is, I have to wonder if he is related to our old Daddy Guard Duck.

History Of Dogs Or Maybe Wolves

Writen by Moses Chia

Origin

Do you know that the adorable little puppy you bought home last week could possibly be a descendent of a wolf? It may well be true! In fact, many theorists believe that wolf is the direct ancestors of domestic dog. Nevertheless, there are just as many who argue that it seems impossible to have over 400 varieties of dogs descended from just one species.

-Anatomically, the make-up molecules of the wolf over the centuries have remained unchanged, and research revealed that the DNA of wolf and dog are almost identical! The general pattern of dogs' skeleton is still very similar to those of wolves in terms of their components, but significant changes can be detected, most obviously in the shape of the skull and the length of some of the limb bones.

The divergence in physical appearance could possibly be the result of mutation or even during cross breeding. Today, breeds such as the Alaskan malamute still retain a strong affinity with the wolf, in terms of their facial appearance and underlying skull structure.

-Behaviorally, both dogs and wolves bury bones; turn in circles before settling down for sleep; howl at the moon and frequently leg lift to mark territory. Both gestation periods is 63 days each, and the birth and development of their young is also almost identical

-Structurally, dogs and wolves are also extremely similar. Both also live in a pack-like hierarchal system where they are comfortable with a top dog, or Alpha role model. With regards to domestic dogs, Alpha (leader) role should belong to the owner they live with.

Whatever the theory, it isn't difficult to spot the similarities between dog and wolf. Although, in some cases, the appearance of the domestic dog has diverged significantly from that of its "suspected" ancestor, most dogs still retain many of the traits of their ancestor.

Man's Best Friend

Early cave drawings show us that wild dogs and wolfs were with humans even in prehistoric time. One of the earliest documentations of man and canine was noted more than 12 000 years ago on an ancient site in Egypt when the fossilized remains of a man and a small puppy were found in a grave in hugging position. Although, it is doubtful whether the puppy was that of dog or wolf, this is not an important issue.

Today, Scientists recognize and agree that the process of domestication of the dog has existed for 14 000 years, however they are not in agreement as to how domestication occurred:

-Some believe that man adopted offspring of the wolf and through natural selection chose to keep those that were less aggressive and that craftily begged for food.

-Others believe that wolves adapted themselves in following man because they could get a good meal.

Whatever the case, it's hard to distinguish if wolves just tagged along or if they were invited. From ancient time till today, man and dog are inseparable who lived together and changed together.

In earlier times man was only concerned with gathering food. However, over time he began to become involved in hunting for food, turning his canine to "friend" as he helped immensely in hunting activities, this occurred some 12 000 years ago.

Later, man realized that not every animal should be his prey, but that some should be kept alive in order to domesticate for his purposes. At that time, domesticated animals needed to be protected from predators, this responsibility was taken up by dog becoming the guard dog, and this new role occurred some 7000-9000 years ago.

Dog Breeding

Dog breeding began when humans started to emphasize certain characteristics in dogs. Long-legged dogs, for instance, could be used to chase prey, heavy-set animals made better guard dogs. Several types of dogs emerged at the time of the New Kingdom in Egypt (circa 1570 B.C.) and drawings began to show dogs with drop ears, curly tails, straight tails and many coat patterns. Soon people all over the world were breeding and using dogs to suit their own needs.

The Greeks and Romans were training heavy-set dogs for sports, the Far East saw the toy dogs as prized possessions and the Europeans were developing sporting dogs for particular uses – smaller dogs to go to ground, stronger dogs to hunt. Dogs started to be grouped by appearance or function for convenience and were then even further divided into workers, herders and sports.

By 15th & 16th centuries, dogs began to gain popularity, not only for being functional, but by becoming a popular pet. The commercial importance of dogs and dog breeding escalated quickly as they became fashionable. During the 19th century, the number of new breeds grew quickly, with the first dog shows beginning in the 1850s.

Today, although there are roughly over 350 different breeds of dogs acknowledged by the FCI classification, all of them have one common quality that follows them throughout history and that is their unconditional love and loyal relationship to man.

This is without a doubt the oldest friendship recorded in history!

Tropical Fish And Its Aquarium Maintenance

Writen by Low Jeremy

Tropical fish includes fish around the world living in tropical environments including salt water and fresh water species. They are popular fish in aquariums because of their bright colors. Tropical also refers to tropical climate wherein the climate is warm or moist all throughout the year integrated by abundant vegetation.

Aquarium is an enclosed clear-sided container made of high strength plastic or constructed glass for keeping or raising animals and plants for research and observation. The ecosystem of the species is copied on smaller scale controlling environmental factors.

Tropical fish being put in the aquarium should be properly taken care of by regular monitoring of the fish and aquarium conditions by checking the waters for bacteria, parasite or fungi occurrences. There are ways on how to determine if the tropical fish are sick.

- Fish scales inspection. Examine for any discoloration, growths or wounds. Scales that is missing is a fighting indication.

- Observation of the fish respiratory rates. Slower or faster rate than normal is a sign of problem.

- Fish eyes clarity checking. Blood or cloudiness should not be present.

- Observation of the fish abnormal behavior such as unusual swimming pattern or sluggishness.

- Veterinarian consultation for any fish abnormalities being observed.

Aquarium serves as the new habitat of your tropical fish so it should be maintained regularly. The procedures are easy protecting the fish and plants lives.

- Regular checking of the tank to ensure that dying or dead fish is not present.

- Observation of all the fish individually for behavioral patterns familiarization so that it is easier to determine a sick fish in the future.

- Feed your fish with one-day intervals using diet variations.

- Replace the evaporated water on the tank with dechlorinated water. - Once a week, removed 5 to 10 percent of the tank water replacing it fresh dechlorinated water. Unwanted chemicals in the tank are diluted helping the tanks internal environment similar to tap water.

- Algae scraping from the walls of the tank done once a week.

- Filter pads checking every two weeks cleaning or replacing them if necessary.

- Water testing done every two weeks. Water change is done after one day.

- Ammonia, nitrate, pH levels or nitrite checking done every two weeks.

- Drain off the debris from the gravel done once a month.

Always keep track the chemical contents of your aquarium and schedule maintenance.
